New Job

A while back Gary's friend Mike told him about an opening at his company in the drafting department. This is the company where Gary worked right out of college from 1998-2001. In 2001 he was one of 4 drafters and was lowest in seniority so when the work volume was really low, they let him go. When Gary told me about the opening at TSP, I wasn't thrilled because of the whole "laid off before" factor. Everyone likes job security, right?

This whole thing has been going on for a while now. First he mentioned it, and I wasn't thrilled (lay off factor). Then he said he turned in an application (not thrilled). Then he had a quick informal interview while visiting Mike one day(still not thrilled). Then they asked him to come back for a formal interview (yeah, still not thrilled). It was making me nervous because Gary seemed really interested in this job and I was worried about another lay off.

Well, last night I opened the mail and there was a letter in there from TSP. I figured if they sent a letter and didn't call it must be a rejection letter, right? Nope. It was a nice big letter because not only was it offering him the job, it contained all the details of his new employment, benefits, salary, etc.

These benefits include better pay than he asked for, the ability to flex his time during the week, and the best part: they were going to credit him his 3 years that he had already put in with the company from 1998-2001. So he is starting out at 4 year seniority. I've never heard of such a thing! It's awesome! Instead of one week of vacation where he currently works, he will have 17 days per year starting at the new job. That's over three weeks!! Plus they were reassuring about the job security since he will be the ONLY drafter in the mechanical department and there is a a backlog of work to do. So, he will be very busy, but that is job security baby! And, if they hire new drafters, he will have the most seniority in that department. And, they are going to give him on the job training and pay for 75% of any education needed to advance him to a "designer" which would be a very nice salaried position. So, needless to say, I have come around a little bit to the benefits of this new job.

Now the hard part. He needs to give his current boss his two weeks notice. This may or may not go smooth as his boss has a tendency to have a temper problem. We'll see.....the boss is out of the office today, so he gets a whole day to prepare what to say and prepare for the yelling if it doesn't go well.

Either way, the new job sounds like it will be a good change after all and I am very happy for Gary! The letter said all sorts of nice things about his good work ethic and how he was a valued employee, etc....and the people are much nicer than where he currently works! So, way to go Gary!
